#11 Investigation;
Hamano’s Suspicions Arise
Hamano stopped short after entering the kido barrier. A small building sat under the dome, but the top corner of it had been cleaved off in what looked like a single swipe. The remains of that roof had collapsed inside of the house where they were being cleared away by the samurai. One of the objects being carried away was a blood spattered bed that had obviously been the Judge’s final resting place. “Such destructive power, can ninjas really achieve something like this?” Her loud thoughts were interrupted when one of the samurai walked up to her. “Don’t doubt your eyes. This is no doubt an assassination by the ninja. Judge Corsuble was the unofficial head of our government, a perfect target for them. Are you a witness?” Hamano shook her head. “I’m only supposed to observe and report for the 9th squad, but why was Judge Corsuble all the way out here?” The samurai looked at the damage again. “This was supposed to be a safehouse for him during the invasion. Eleven ninja are said to have infiltrated our city and are hiding out, waiting for the right moment to attack. This was most likely them.” Hamano thought for a second. “But Judge Corsuble was killed almost right after he reached the safehouse right? So wouldn’t that mean they would have had to know he would be moved? And the only ones who knew that were the commander and…!” The samurai grabbed Hamano by the neck of her shirt lifting her slightly off the ground. “You did not just doubt your superiors did you?!” Hamano shook her head trying to calm the man desperately. “No, no, I just thought that maybe someone was eavesdropping on them and that you should search around wherever they met last.” He released her almost immediately. “That’s a good idea. You may have just helped the investigation miss sixth squad.” The samurai hurriedly walked away to claim the revelation as his own and left with a small group of other samurai to investigate.
“Fools.” Hamano covered her mouth quickly and looked around to see if anyone had heard her. ‘I have to stop thinking out loud, but there’s no way anyone was listening in on commander Shigekuni’s conversation, he’s much too aware for that to happen. No, this has to have been something else.’
Commander Shigekuni stood before a crowd making his speech in the grandest of ways. The recent infiltration of a small group of shinobi and the assassination of the country’s leader had prompted him to propose a solution that would solve all of the problems quickly and easily. His idea was for the country to relinquish its governmental affairs to the military during the times of war in which such expertise is required. In a blunt statement the idea would have been spurned without remorse, but his eloquent delivery and gentleness with words prompted the crowd below to roar with approval at a speedy solution to their problems. Of all the people gathered below only one showed any sign of disapproval at the drastic change. Hamano stood in the middle of the ruckus studying her commander intently. However, the effort was in vain as his old age had made him impossible to read. He watched from his podium as the samurai girl worked her way to the outer parts of the crowd and on her way home. “Captain Charlemagne, I do believe that soldier was from 6th squad.” The captain moved forward so he could lower his voice. “Yes sir, her name is Hamano. She was the guard that had spoken with the captive.” Commander Shigekuni nodded intently. “Bring her in for questioning. We must assess where her loyalties truly lie.”
#12 Chuudoku
The Poison Ninja?...
Chuudoku sat calmly on his rock smoking from his meter long kiseru pipe. “What are two captain class samurai doing all the way out in a place like this? And killing all of my ninja too.” Charlemagne smiled at the new challenge. “We were sent to eradicate all ninja in this town, and from what I can tell each one of them seemed to be able and willing to fight back.” Chuudoku took another puff from his pipe, blowing purple smoke into the air. “Regardless, I’m going to have to ask you to leave now.” Charlemagne tightened his grip around his sword. “Not a chance old timer. My blade’s been thirsty for some action.” Chuudoku eyed the cane-stick sword Charlemagne was wielding. “Your sword uses poison doesn’t it? How convenient.” Edward unleashed a rain of razor sharp feathers at their opponent. The smoke from his pipe filled the air before their impact serving as a smoke screen.
“Edward you moron, this guy’s mine! Just go home or something!” “I wouldn’t say that if I were you.” Charlemagne and Edward’s eyes widened. Chuudoku was sitting pleasantly on the grass behind him still smoking his kiseru pipe. “You have no idea what you’ve gotten yourself into.” The two captains turned to their opponent who had escaped detection of any kind and repositioned himself comfortably. “Fine then!” Charlemagne raised his sword over his head and slashed down sending a purple scythe of poison at his enemy. The purple wave was sucked into the pipe and Chuudoku breathed out similar purple wisps. “Your poison has a more refined taste than what I’m used to.” Charlemagne charged forward with his face tightened in anger and he charged the old ninja. “Bankai! Longinus Lance!” Charlemagne gripped his crystal pommel pulling out a long spear for within it. The tip of the spear glowed red, blazing with fire as he stabbed at his enemy.
Edward watched with a feeling of dread as Charlemagne attacked the enemy. Fire exploded from the tip of his spear supposedly incinerating Chuudoku, but as the fire receded he sat in his same position except for his kiseru pipe. The bowl at the end of the pipe had met the pointed head of the spear perfectly, holding Charlemagne back. “You have no idea what you’re getting yourself into.” Chuudoku parried the spear into the ground and swiftly cracked the bowl of the pipe into Charlemagne’s chin sending him flying back towards the other captain. He slid ungracefully across the ground gathering dirt and dust on his previously immaculate black suit before coming to rest at Edward’s feet. The spear still stuck in the ground by Chuudoku disintegrated at its master’s unconsciousness.
“I hope you can provide more of a challenge.” Chuudoku stood up for the first time since his appearance, but still smoking from his oversized kiseru pipe. Edward leaped forward and with a flap of his wide wings he was upon Chuudoku. His blade met with the metal portion of the kiseru pipe. “You should know that defeating Charlemagne has no affect on me. I hold no respect for his abilities in battle.” A light flashed from the hollow portion of his sword and he drove the blunt end into his opponent’s chest pushing him backwards. A white aura appeared in his hand slowly defining itself into a downy feather. He ran the feather down his blade and as it reached the sudden end it returned to its amorphous form and became the blade point. Edward held the sword in front of him with the newly formed point inches from his chest. “Bankai.” To the surprise of his enemy Edward drove the sword into the center of his chest until the star shaped hilt met with his body. Edward began glowing white first from his wound, but soon the reverse silhouette had spread across his entire body and his wings, stripping them of their feathered texture. The handle of the sword disappeared leaving only the gold, six–pointed star in the center of his chest. From it a white rob wove out seemingly pulling its stitches from the flesh of its creator. He rose into the sky without flapping his wings and, in fact, remaining entirely motionless. The pair of wings had spread wide to where each one’s length rivaled his body’s height. Each wing separated itself into three of equal length giving him a total of six that surrounded his body. “Saint of Six.”
Chuudoku eyed the captain’s new form in annoyance. “Now this is just becoming time consuming. A bankai shouldn’t take so long to activate; you must be one of the newer captains. Am I right?” Edward’s face remained stagnant, preserving its angelic appearance. A cordial smile cut through the tenseness of the battle scene only to be half blocked by a feather he pulled in front of his face. “I’m sorry, but I have my orders.” The feather instantly transformed into a silver dagger, but his movement was so astonishing that the knife was already halfway to its target. Edward’s smile remained on his face despite his surprise. The tip of the knife was balanced in the bowl of Chuudoku’s pipe. “Cute toy kid, but I’ll say it one more time; you don’t know what you’re getting yourself into.” Feathers lofted out from Edwards wings, each one turning into a silver dagger that floated within a perimeter around him. “Fine then.” Chuudoku twirled his pipe around like a staff, leaving a purple trail of ash and smoke where the bowl had traveled. He held the pipe in front of him as a heavy purple smoke began pouring from it. The smog rolled in thick heap onto the ground where it seemed to stir like an animal. “Ban…” Edward’s eyes widened and his smile faded from his face for the first time. “…KAI!”
